Test side as part of their tour of England. The first time the
Australians won the match, and also beat England in the only test match at Lords
in
this game, where the MCC
scored 33 all out and 19 all out and the Australians won with scores of 41 all
out and 12 for 1. The following tour in 1880 saw England win the only test
at
the Oval,
and in the touring match the 18 of Stockport and District beat the Australian
XI. Obviously having 18 players is a massive advantage for any side, and
this was a practice much more common in those days, but how many players would a
club side need to beat the current Australian team? Stockport also had the
services of 3 Yorkshire players,
Tom Emmett, a current test player at the time,
Billy Bates, who took England's first test
hat-trick and
Allen Hill, who both played and umpired test
cricket and all three contributed largely towards the win. The matchball
from the game is displayed along with the scorecard in the pavilion.

The Scorecard from the match is copied below;
