After the 1998 season, Stockport CC decided to approach Stockport Sunday School CC with a view to merging the clubs in order to secure the future of the Cale Green club. As a result of this merger, Stockport CC withdrew from the CLL and played in the DCCL in a team now formed from players originally from both clubs. In the first season there was instant success for the club, with the 1st XI (right) winning the Bissenden Cup, with John Brooks being named Man of the Match for his efforts. The 2nd XI were also successful with Dave Wilks’ team winning their league based largely on the efforts of Steve Jackson and Mike Beaver, who won the league bowling and wicketkeeping prizes respectively. The following year the 2nd XI made it back to back titles and similarly Mike Beaver held onto his wicketkeeping prize.
Beaver
made it a hattrick in 2001, and the 2nds added a Hawke Trophy victory over Dove
Holes to their tally of prizes in recent years. 2001 was also the first season
in which what would prove to be one of our most successsful junior sides won
their first trophy, with an under 13s league title, beating New Mills in the
final. The under 13s retained this title with a victory over Romiley, and a 2nd
XI victory over Hayfield (left), led by the bowling of Steve Jackson and 61*
from Man of the Match Mike Short. Bob Cooke claimed the 1st XI
bowling averages prize to compensate for a near miss in the batting averages the
previous year.
2003 was the first season since the merger which had not produced a trophy for the senior sides, but this did not stop Bill Hobman from claiming the 2nd XI batting prize and Adam Roughley claiming the 2nd XI wicketkeeping prize. Where the seniors failed, however, the juniors did not disappoint, building on their previous success to claim the under 15s title, again beating New Mills in the final. The under 17 also experienced success with victory in the Compstall Cup final over Hayfield. This season was also to be Bob Cooke’s last with the club after deciding to retire from league cricket.
The 2nd XI returned to form in 2004 with a league and cup double, with Simon Lister being awarded Man of the Match in the cup final victory over Hadfield. Adam Roughley retained his wicketkeeping prize to make it 5 years out of 6 that our wicketkeepers were the league leaders. This season also saw the creation of our outdoor nets which were a clear sign that the club was developing both on and off the field. The under 15s were again crowned champions with a tense one wicket victory over Romiley, while a young under 17s side fell at the last by losing a tied game on a countback to New Mills.
The
same sides met again in the final the following year, but Stockport were
victorious, and made it a double with victory in the Compstall Cup, beating Dove
Holes in the final. The 3rd XI won promotion to division 2 (left) in the first
year of Mark Willoughby's captaincy, and he followed this a year later
with promotion to division 1. Bob Cooke came out of retirement in 2006 and
seamlessly returned to first team action, which was now showing the benefits of
the junior system with youth and experience combining at all levels within the
club. The 2nd XI took their tally to 7 trophies since the merger,
with a Dave Wilks inspired Hawke Trophy victory over Whaley Bridge. The under
17s were again dominant, and won a 2nd successive double with
victories over New Mills in the league final, and Dinting in the cup.
